Utility tariffs set to increase

1.1510099Water and electricity consumers will be expected to pay higher bills as the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) have adjusted the said tariffs.

The commission had initially proposed a 31 and 14 per cent increase in electricity and water (management level) respectively but reviewed it to 12 per cent for electricity and 6.1 per cent for water.

This upward adjustment of tariffs was supposed to happen within the second quarter of this year but it was suspended due to poor service and the on-going power rationing.

The implementation of the new tariffs will begin July 2014.

The move was in line with the automatic adjustment formula, which gives the commissioners the power to either maintain current tariffs or review it.
