Oil workers declare one day strike

The General Transport, Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union, has declared a one day strike today to register their displeasure about the dismissal of the 27 MODEC workers last week.

The workers were dismissed after they protested the unfair treatment meted out to them as compared to their foreign counterparts. They complain the expatriates were being paid more than they were.

The local workers that remained are being directed by the petroleum company to sign a bond of good behavior.

FPSOThe Union is demanding the complete reinstatement of the sacked workers with immediate effect and a withdrawal of what it calls “unacceptable directives” to the remaining workers.

General Secretary of the union, Kwakye Afreh Nuamah indicated that its members in sensitive units of the petroleum sector like the West Africa Gas Pipeline, Tema Oil Refinery, and Tanker drivers’ union will not work today.

Chairman of the Union, Samuel Quarshie stated emphatically that they had the capacity to grind the sector to halt if MODEC refused to adhere to the demands of the workers.

He, however, expressed the hope that management of MODEC would see reason to reinstate the dismissed workers and withdraw the unlawful directive.
