Nissan To Set Up Assembly Plant In Ghana

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says international car manufacturing company, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd also wants to set up its assembly plant in Ghana.

German car manufacturer, Volkswagen and Sinotruk International from China have all served notice of setting up assembly plants in Ghana.

“We have talked about an automobile industry and the VW deal that has taken place, Nissan is also coming but we are not looking at it in the context of only one supplier like VW, we are looking at a policy that applies to the entire automobile industry,” he said on Tuesday when he spoke at the Ghana Industrial Summit and Exhibition in Accra.

He said because more automobile companies are coming onboard, his government is aiming at creating a fair ground for both local and foreign automobile companies.

He added, “we have had discussions for example with our local producers like Kantanka to make sure that whatever incentives we are providing to all companies who are becoming interested our automobile industry like the Nissans and VWs, are also available to the Kantankas of Ghana so that they can also produce with those same types of incentives.”

Also speaking at the event, Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyeremanteng said they have received a number of proposals from more of such international automobile companies.

“Look at the kind of proposals we are getting from big international companies when we kick-started the agenda, VW has already signed the MOU and the latest to join is Nissan which is far advanced with discussions to establish in Ghana,” the Minister said.

Alan Kyeremanteng said they are opening up to such companies as part of President Akufo-Addo’s industrial transformation agenda.

“We have added the automobile industry into our key initiatives to move the industrial transformation of this country but people were doubting. I tell you we have received a massive response from the private sector after we send the strong signal of industrializing the economy,” he added.
