MTN Ghana partners Garmin to launch tech watches

Garmin has announced a partnership with MTN Ghana which will see the two technology companies launch a range of wearable tech watches in the country to encourage people to live a more active lifestyle.

The mobile network operator is offering a free three-month data bundle deal for customers purchasing one of 6 Garmin products on offer from MTN ‘s pinnacle stores.

Mike Clarke, Business Development Manager for Garmin says the navigation and communication device maker’s devices are compatible with several operating systems.

“Our Garmin watches are supported by various mobile devices operating on Android, iOS or Microsoft platforms giving all customers the chance to get fit and healthy while staying connected.”

The range of wearable tech watches are health and fitness watches that monitor and record daily activities and motivate users towards a healthier lifestyle according to Garmin. Some are also smart devices that pair a smartphone to display personal data, text messages and emails on a device.

A connected Garmin mobile app allows Garmin Connect members to review, relive and share their activities and to track steps, goals, sleep, weight and calories burned.

Jenna Chisnall, General Manager of Garmin Sub-Saharan Africa says partnering with a mobile network operator in the African continent makes sense due to the growing interest in fitness that they have observed among Africans.

“It was the right approach to partner with the leading telecommunications provider to bring these innovative solutions into Africa where we have seen an increasing interest and adoption of healthy lifestyles by many people,” said Chisnall.

The Garmin product range includes the vivoFit 3, vivoMove , vivoSmart, vivoActive, Fenix 3 and Garmin Index smart scale that measures weight (lbs, kg, st), body mass index (BMI), body fat/water percentage, bone and muscle mass.

All the devices connect through Wi-Fi, enabling the user to wirelessly sync data to Garmin Connect.
