GTA poised to employ E-Tourism to boost industry

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has disclosed that the authority is working vigorously to employ E-Tourism to promote the industry.

The industry which is said to be the fourth biggest contributor to Ghana’s GDP generated 10.5 billion cedis in 2015.

In addition, the industry directly created over 290,000 jobs in the same year under review.

Speaking in an interview, the Press Officer at the GTA, Kojo Bentum-Williams stated that the authority has partnered with internet giant Google to help promote Ghana’s tourism potentials to the world through E-Tourism.

“It it something we have done to give stakeholders in the industry an opportunity to market the nation’s tourism industry. You know internet connectivity with hotels and some of our tourism areas are important parts of this industry,” he said.

Mr. Bentum-Williams comments follow a recent report published by international online hotel booking company JOVAGO.

Among others, the report pointed out that majority of hotels lack internet facilities, a situation that discouraged tourists from lodging in certain parts of the country.

The report also identified lack of infrastructural development as a major hindrance to both  domestic and foreign tourism in Ghana.

Reacting to some of the findings, Mr. Bentum Williams maintained that even though the industry required some uplifting it has seen some capital injection that has made the sector reached its current status.

He pointed out that the authority is aware of  how the hotel sector drives the industry, hence a deliberate move embarked upon by the authority to enhance professional and international standards.

There are a lot of initiatives that have been done over the years in addressing challenges of infrastructure. It is part of the reason why Ghana is favorite destination for many tourists across the globe, he stressed.
