Germany to invest in solar power

Representatives of eight companies from Germany have concluded a week-long visit to Ghana after assessing the country’s solar market potential.

The German government late last year gave Ghana 1.8million euro to help the country implement the renewable energy law, which projects that by 2020, some 10% of the country’s power should come from renewable sources including solar.

Rather than providing solar panels for individual homes, the Germans are interested in ventures that will add megawatts of power to the National Grid, that way; they are guaranteed good returns on their investment.

For just two megawatts of solar energy for the national grid, the VRA had to install so many photovoltaic panels on the large expanse of land at Navrongo in the Northern region.

Critics of the grid-connected solar power say the move is not viable because it will require large amounts of land and would rather prefer the supply of solar panels to individual homes.

The visit of the German delegation was facilitated by the german chamber of commerce and the German development corporation
