Fair Trade Ghana Network has secured a three-year project support of €3.9million to support 20 producer organisations engaged in the production of cocoa, Shea, fruits, cashew and craft in five countries within West Africa.
The project is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM).
The beneficiary producer organisations are drawn from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Mali and Togo. The project is expected to help boost the production of the targeted crops within the sub-region.
At its maiden Annual General Meeting at Bunso in the Eastern Region last week, the revived Network adopted a new constitution and elected a five-member executive committee with a three-year mandate.
As part of the organisation’s restructuring, membership of the network is now opened to other Fair Trade certified groups such as the World Fair Trade organisation and Ecocert.
Martha Rainer Opoku Mensah, the National Technical Assistant of the Equity Project and staff of Fair Trade Africa who coordinated the meeting stressed the need for the network to be sustained.
She said Fair Trade was committed to building a strong producer network for sustainable development.
