Alitalia suspends Ghana operations

The national carrier of Italy, Alitalia has suspended direct flights to Accra bringing the total number of airlines that have cancelled their services to Accra to four.

Alitalia’s last flight to Accra was last Friday.

It is alleged that the reason the airline decided to pull out was because of high cost of operations compounded by high cost of aviation fuel and airport taxes in Accra however, sources close to the Airport Company said high cost of operations had nothing to do with Alitalia’s decision.

According to the sources, the decision was taken by Alitalia’s new owners, Etihad Airlines, which is said to be reviewing its operations in Africa.

United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Brussels Airlines are the other three airlines that have cancelled services to Accra, Ghana.
