Air Namibia to pull out of Ghana

FreeVector-Air-NamibiaFrom June 26, this year, Air Namibia is expected to halt its operations in Ghana.

The airline took a similar decision, last year, but later aborted making the move.

Persons close to the issue say the airline, which is wholly owned by the Namibian government, is being forced to pull out of the country because it has difficulty keeping up with operational costs.

The Namibian government, which currently subsidises the airline’s operations, is said to have been forced to cut down funds due to economic challenges.

This is the second time within two years that a major airline is pulling out of Ghana as Virgin Atlantic pulled out of Ghana in September last year due to high fuel costs in Ghana, among others.

Air Namibia’s Windhoek-Accra route was first introduced into Ghana in November 2009 and has had to compete with South Africa Airways on that route.

After an announcement last year by South African Airways to increase its operational routes and flights in Namibia, Air Namibia is said to have recorded slow growth due to the competition.

According to aviation industry players, the Windhoek – Accra route was only profitable during the month of December and failed to generate a positive turnover for the airline during the rest of the year.

Both Air Namibia and Ghana’s  Transport Ministry have however remained tight lipped about the move.
