Turkish company to construct two power ships for Ghana

Two emergency power ships are expected to be built for Ghana by Turkish firm, Karpower International Limited.

The project, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum announced, is part of government’s plan to achieve the 5000 Megawatts target by 2016.

The two transportable energy plants will function as independent power producers.

Government will have no hand in pre-financing the project as Karpower International Limited will construct, deliver and operate the plants independently.

“The Power ship in itself has been pre-finance by Karpower International and the off taker agreement would be paid on delivered energy into the system and so there is no government financing attached to the project,” Karpower’s Regional Director for Africa and Asia stated.

Speaking on the total cost of the project Patrick O’Driscoll said the total cost of the overall project will depend on the cost of fuel through the term of the contract and would also depend on the amount of kilowatts per hour of power that would actually be dispatched and absorbed by the networks.

The project is expected to add 450Megawatts to the national grid.
