Tigo invests US$3.2million in overhead fibre cables

Telecom operator, Tigo Ghana has begun work on a US$3.2million overhead fibre optic cable project in the Ashanti and Western regions.

The three phase project, which is expected to be completed in February 2015 will cover a 360 kilometre stretch from Dunkwa through to Kumasi and will involve putting up some 4, 600 concrete poles.

This, according to the company, is to bring to an end the indiscriminate cuts of its cables by property developers, activities of illegal miners as well as road construction; an act that is affecting the quality of the network in both regions.

Chief operations officer for the telco, Obafemi Banigbe says the move will stop people from digging out the cables and cutting them thus improving service delivery.
“On the average we record about 51 cable cuts every month between the Ashanti and Western regions and this is mainly due to the operations of illegal mine workers and on-going road expansion projects in both regions.

“Apart from spending millions annually to replace these cables, the impact on customer and user experience is damaging to say the least…Putting the cables on overhead concrete poles would stop people from digging them out in the ground and this will boost network quality, improve Customer and user experience and also increase Tigo’s coverage footprints in both the Ashanti and Western regions.
