NCA to acquire systems to identify sim card owners

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has revealed it is acquiring a new system to identify the true identity of people who purchase SIM cards.

This according to the Authority will help prevent SIM box fraud.

This move came after six people, including the former CEO of Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), Dr Alexander Tweneboah, were arrested for SIM box fraud.

According to reports, about 21,232 SIM cards were recovered from one operator which is said to have denied the country over 30 million dollars.

Principal Manager in charge of the Regulatory Administration at the NCA, Kwame Baah-Acheamfour disclosed that when the true identify of SIM card owners are determined SIM box fraud will be a thing of the past.

“The facilitation is that you need a SIM card and if my name is Kwame I have registered the sim card, will I allow it to be put in a sim box for fraud?” he explained.

According to Principal Manger the SIM box fraud could not be easily traced to a particular person adding, “at the end of the day the entire 21 thousand SIM card that was arrested with the particular operator we cannot be pointed to anyone, if it could be pointed to a particular person we would not have allowed that.”

He then disclosed that the NCA has collaborated with international partners to ensure its smooth operation.

“There are international partners involved with us because it is an international trade so we are bringing in international traffic. It is expected to be well run,” he said.
