MTN maintains dominance in mobile data – NCA

MTN Ghana, the market leader in mobile telephony service in the country, according to data from the National Communications Authority for February 2017, is still in the lead as far as its subscriber numbers and market share for mobile data is concerned.

The South African company’s mobile data subscribers for February were a little above 11.27 million with the company’s market share for the month under review being 57.26 percent.

Airtel which has just completed merger talks with Tigo, came second and were followed closely by their new partner Tigo.

Airtel’s mobile data subscriptions for February 2017 was also a little below 2.84 million subscribers with a market share for the month being 14.43 percent.

At the third position, according to the data from the NCA was Tigo whose data subscriptions for February stood at a little above 2.72 million subscribers, recording market share for the month under review was 13.83 percent.

Total number of subscriptions for Vodafone’s mobile data for the same month was a little above 2.56 million subscribers. This reflects a market share of 12.97 percent.

However, Glo the Nigerian-based telecom giant continues to struggle to grow its subscriber base in Ghana, as it recorded data subscriber figures of 269,466 which reflects a market share of 1.37%.

Meanwhile Expresso’s mobile data subscriber figures continues to dip, as it recorded 29,169 at the close of February.

This represents a market share of 0.15 percent for the month under review.

NCA’s total mobile data penetration as the end of February 2017 stood at 69.83 percent with the total subscriptions of mobile data in the country reaching a little above 19.70 million.

Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Operators 

MTN 4G, which was launched last year and introduced the 4G to its existing BWA’s in February 2017, recorded a total of 156,251 subscriptions.

They are followed by Surfline who recorded subscriptions of 77,882 in the same month.

Broadband Home recorded a total of 26,383 subscribers.

While Blu Ghana in the month under review recorded a total subscription of 992.

Meanwhile, NCA data reveals that the total number of subscriptions for Broadband Wireless Access data was 261,508 as at the end of February 2017.
