Government is in the process of streamlining registration and consolidation of records by digitising the processes, to ensure an effective land administration system in the country, the Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated.
The new process, which would be initiated this year, would allow potential land owners to search for land title ownership or register their lands in the comfort of their homes.
“This is time to change the system to streamline the system, the valuation of property, and the digitalising of property, the search processes, and the consolidation of records”.
Vice-President Bawumia made these comments when he paid a surprise visit to the Land Title Registration Unit of the Lands Commission at Cantonments in Accra, to familiarise himself with land registration and acquisition processes.
Subsequently, a land conference is scheduled on February 28 to brainstorm and to take important decisions on the way forward.
Vice-President Bawumia bemoaned the current situation where land registration continues to be a big challenge in the country, with many people going through a lot of frustration in acquiring lands.
“We have been living with this problem in Ghana for years, but we’re not changing it; therefore there is time for us to change the system and not accept the status quo,” he stated.
The Vice-President said people faced a lot of frustration in acquiring lands, coupled with multiple sales of lands resulting in protracted court litigations.
He emphasised that land was a key component in the development of many countries around the world; therefore, Ghana needed to streamline her land acquisition processes in order to take advantage of the mortgage market.
It is for this reason that government, under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, takes the issues of streamlining its land registration and acquisition processes to make it more efficient and easily accessible.
He noted that the Survey Department and Land Title Registration units, which are currently segregated, should be consolidated to ensure efficient service delivery and help the mortgage market to develop.
The Vice-President further noted that by 2019, all land agencies would move to one spacious area in view of the poor working environment they are currently operating in.
