Google Ghana has launched a metro fibre project link in Accra to help Internet service providers and mobile network operators to provide broadband service to their customers at an affordable cost in the country.
The metro fibre project, according to the Google Ghana Country Manager, Ms Estelle Akofio-Sowah, would enable local Internet providers and mobile operators to expand their services to Accra, Tema and Kumasi.
She explained that internet providers in those three cities would be the forerunners of the project, adding that “there is high demand for broadband to facilitate business in Accra, Tema and Kumasi”.
“One thousand two-hundred kilometres of metro fibre will be built in Accra, Tema and Kumasi to provide speed and capacity to work with, as well as meet escalating demands of Internet users in these cities,” she said.
Ms Akofio-Sowah said the project would enhance Internet services and address bandwidth needs of clients in the cities.
“Construction on the network started earlier this year, with service planned to commence early 2016,” she assured.
The President of the Ghana Internet Services Providers Association, Mr Ernest Brown, said “the launch of the metro fibre link could help improve infrastructure sharing in Ghana by providing the needed capacity for the increasing bandwidth requirements of Ghanaian internet and data users.
“This is a great initiative for the country’s telecommunications industry and we look forward to participating in its growth,” he explained.
The Deputy Minister of Communications, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, commended Google for the initiative and expressed the hope that its growth could benefit students in communicating with their counterparts globally to enrich their knowledge in academia.
